Contact Your State Lawmakers

Along with contacting our members of Congress, it's also important to message your state lawmakers about bills you want them to support or oppose. We're starting a new segment to help you write to your legislators in Pierre.

Republicans are trying to tell South Dakotans what they can and cannot buy at the grocery store (HB 1056). Punishing people who are already struggling to get by is cruel. Below is a sample letter you can send to members on the House Health and Human Services Committee.

Dear Representative,

My name is _________ and I live in ____________. I am urging you to vote NO on HB 1056. The government should not be punishing people for what they buy at the grocery store. That is not freedom, that is government control. Instead, we should be incentivizing SNAP recipients to buy healthier food. Studies have proven that incentive programs work better than banning people from buying junk food. Why is it okay for you or me to buy junk food, but not a family who is trying to get out of poverty? That is why I am asking you to vote no on HB 1056.
